1. What is water with high iron content?

Nowadays, most of the water resources have high iron content, ‘cause the high amout of iron in it, along with the process of urbanization, which leads to the consequences of increasingly serious groundwater and domestic water pollution.

In natural water, including surface and ground water, they all contain iron. Iron content and their existing forms depend on each kind of water resource and environmental condition.

In surface water, iron exists in form of Fe3+ compounds, or colloidal form or suspension form. This concentration is not alwasys high and can be reduced during purification process.

In groundwater, iron often exists in oxidation states +2 in the component of dissolved salts like bicarbonate, sulfate, chloride,… This iron content is usually high and is unevenly distributed in deep sediments.

 When there is a high iron content in water, the water has a fishy odor and a lot of yellow dregs, which reduces the quality of drinking water for drinking and production. Therefore, when the iron content in water is greater than the permissible limit, iron reduction must be carried out.
2. How to treat high iron content in water?
There are many traditional methods of iron contaminated water treatment such as: treatment method with lime, treatment by acidic alum, treatment by filtration tank system, ... however, these water treatment methods give low efficiency and are complex to perform. Treatment of water with high iron content by PAC flocculation method is the optimal solution which gives high efficiency and extremely quickly.
3. Advantages of treatment method with PAC:

  • High pH stability, easy to adjust pH when handling, saving chemicals used to increase alkalinity and associated equipment such as dosing pumps and chemical tanks compared to using Kali alum.
  • Reducing the volume of sludge during treatment.
  • Increasing the clarity of water, prolong the filtration cycle, increasing the quality of the filtered water.
  • Low dosage, large cotton and easy to settle.
  • Less corrosive to equipment.
  • PAC works best at pH = (6.5 -> 8.5). Therefore, at this pH, heavy metal ions precipitate and sink to the bottom or stick to the colloidal particles.



4. Instruction for treating high iron content in water with PAC:

Preparing PAC into 5 -10% solution before using. Adjusting pH of water source to be treated by caustic soda or acid. Mixing it with many different chemicals which depends on suspended sludge content and properties of each kind of water to be treated.
