1. What  is waste ?

Wastes are objects and materials that the user no longer wants to use and dispose them, however, in some contexts, it may not be useful to this person but is the benefit of others. In life, waste is visualized as substances that are no longer used with the toxins emitted from them.

According to current statistics, the total volume of domestic solid waste in Vietnam is estimated around 12.8 million tons/year, in which 6.9 million tons/year is from the urban area (accounting for 54%), the rest focuses in districts, towns and communes. Forecast shows the total volume of urban domestic solid waste until 2020 will be about 22 million tons/year.

Thus, with the increase in domestic solid waste as mentioned above, the risk of environmental pollution and the impact on public health is very alarming. 

 

2. Waste classification

There are 6 basic types, including:

  • Domestic solid waste: organic waste, inorganic waste and recyclable waste.

Organic waste: Organic waste is very biodegradable, often recycled into compost or animal feed. Such as food, tea grounds, coffee, flowers, leaves, grass, plants, ...

Inorganic waste: Inorganic waste is all waste that cannot be used or recycled. They can only be disposed by landfill. Such as packaging, bottles, ...

Recyclable waste: Recycling is the type of waste that is difficult to decompose but can be recycled and used. Such as waste paper, food cartons/bottles/cans, ...

  • Office waste: Office waste is understood as office waste that is no longer in use. They can be old papers, out of ink, damaged ...
  • Industrial waste: Industrial waste is waste with extremely toxic ingredients such as impregnation, detergent, chemicals, industrial scrap ...

If industrial waste is not treated well before being discharged into the environment, it will affect people's lives, health as well as the surrounding environment.

  • Agricultural waste: Agricultural waste is known to be insecticide and growth stimulant.
  • Construction waste: Construction waste is discharged into the surrounding environment from the construction and repair of buildings. These types of waste are also known as debris, including bricks, stones, dirt ....
  • Medical waste: Medical waste is solid, liquid, gaseous objects discharged from a medical facility. Including: infectious waste, sharp objects, laboratory waste, pharmaceuticals, patient samples.

3. Waste treatment technology

Process of hazardous waste collection, transportation and treatment:

Depending on the composition, nature and characteristics that waste is stored in different equipments for safe transportation and avoid spillage and leakage:
Solid wastes  (such as cloths , gloves with viscous oil, chemicals, solvents, packagings get all kinds of chemicals stains, powdered waste, edges of boards, waste electronic boards, ...)  will be stored in PE bags, cloth bags or containers.

Lubricants, solvents, chemicals will be stored in plastic or iron containers.
Types of wastewater, liquid sludge are stored in tanks and transported by tank trucks to the treatment site. Waste after being transported to the treatment place, inspected, loaded and unloaded by means of transport according to the following waste storage procedures:

When any vehicle transporting waste arrive at the factory, it will be checked to ensure that there will be no disturbance between types of waste during transportation.

If there is no disturbance, The classification team will compare with the hazardous waste management documents to determine the type of waste and unload it from the vehicle. If the waste has been disturbed, the classification team will conduct a preliminary classification based on the hazardous waste management document right after unloading waste from the truck and assign the warehouse team to measure and determine the quantity. 

After having preliminary data, the classification team carried out the detailed classification and packed the waste according to the specifications for convenience of treatment. Waste is divided into groups corresponding to the treatment method of each type of waste: incineration treatment, solidification treatment, recycling ... 

After being classified, the waste will be imported and stored in the prescribed area to wait for the disposal of the warehouse in accordance with the proposed treatment plan. 
Beside the recyclable waste, the rest are waste that must be disposed. Depending on the characteristics of each waste, it can be classified into two categories: waste containing hazardous components and waste without hazardous components (ordinary waste). The majority of hazardous wastes have commercial value, so for waste treatment and treatment service providers, the government has strict regulations and sanctions.
